Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs): IJRU’s Guide to WADA Compliance
As a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code Signatory, IJRU has increased responsibility and accountability for keeping jump rope a clean sport. Part of IJRU’s anti-doping responsibilities includes issuing Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE).
A TUE is a mandatory international standard established for athletes with health conditions, for which the treatment is a WADA prohibited substance or method.
The process of TUE application starts with:
Cross-checking the WADA Prohibited List for medications and methods. If the athlete’s medication or method is prohibited, then a TUE needs to be submitted to TUE@ijru.sport.
2. IJRU’s TUE application can be found atijru.sport/rules/anti-doping/tue. In addition to the application, supplemental information such as physician notes, presenting symptoms, and laboratory values may be necessary.
After submission, IJRU’s TUE Committee processes and deliberates over TUE approval and conditions. IJRU’s TUE Committee is composed of 4 to 5 medical doctors who volunteer their time to consider each TUE application.
To-date in 2025, IJRU TUE Committee has experienced a significant increase in TUE submissions. Many of these TUE were not warranted.
Year | TUEs Submitted | TUEs Granted for Prohibited Substances | Incorrectly Submitted TUEs |
---|---|---|---|
2025 | 68 | 28 | 40 |
2024 | 11 | 5 | 6 |
2023 | 23 | 9 | 14 |
2022 | 10 | 3 | 7 |
We understand that anti-doping can be a source of confusion and stress for athletes, coaches, and parents. Please remember to follow the steps above and email TUE@ijru.sport should you have any questions or concerns. We appreciate your commitment to keep jump rope a clean sport.
